The Liberation Center is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rooted in San Antonio, Texas, committed to education, empowerment, cultural development, and community care. Our work is grounded in the belief that liberation begins when people’s basic needs are met, their identities are affirmed, and their voices are cultivated through learning and creative expression.
Guided by this mission, The Liberation Center addresses both immediate community needs and long-term transformational outcomes through an integrated model that combines direct service, education, and the arts.
This holistic approach is embodied through our two core program branches:
Kuumba Liberal Arts Program uses the arts and humanities as tools for education, reflection, and social change. Through original stage productions and creative works rooted in lived experience, Kuumba addresses real-life challenges such as poverty, displacement, and identity, fostering dialogue and community awareness while encouraging personal and collective transformation.
Ujima Community Initiative views care for unhoused neighbors as a collective responsibility. Our service work is intentionally connected to our educational and cultural programs, recognizing that sustainable change requires both immediate relief and pathways for long-term empowerment.
Together, Kuumba Liberal Arts Program and Ujima Community Initiative create a continuum of impact—meeting immediate needs, cultivating cultural consciousness, and building a strong foundation for lifelong learning, self-determination, and community transformation.
